Palermo, N.Y. – A CNY city hit by massive snowfall is bracing for even more as relentless lake-effect snow continues to pound the region.
Historic Snowfall Paralyzes Palermo
Patricia Redhead, supervisor of the Oswego County town of Palermo, described the snowfall as unprecedented, saying the town has been buried under nonstop storms for nearly two weeks.
“This is just one storm after another,” Redhead said. “Normally, we get a break to clean up, but this year, it’s relentless.”
Emergency Crews Battle 78 Inches of Snow
According to the National Weather Service, Palermo has recorded 78 inches of snow so far and could see another 2 to 3 feet by Wednesday.
🚨 Key Snowfall Totals in Palermo:
- 19 inches fell on Tuesday
- 27 inches was recorded on Saturday
“The highway department has been out every single day,” Redhead noted. “Our team worked nearly 24 hours straight just to keep roads passable.”

Lake-Effect Snow Hammers Central New York
Lake-effect snow has battered Central New York, with Palermo facing some of the heaviest snowfall this season. The neighboring village of Copenhagen in Lewis County has seen over 300 inches, making it the snowiest populated place in the U.S. this winter.
How Long Will the Snow Last?
The National Weather Service has placed all of Oswego County under a lake-effect snow warning until Wednesday morning.
Wind patterns continue to determine which areas get hit hardest. Some forecasters say another major system could bring even more snow in the coming days.
“If the wind shifts, we could see even more accumulation,” one meteorologist warned.

Syracuse Among the Snowiest Cities
Syracuse, known as one of the snowiest cities in the U.S., has measured 89.3 inches of snow this season—below its historical average but the most snowfall recorded in the city since 2018.
Residents Brace for More Snowfall
With another 2 to 3 feet of snow expected, residents are being urged to take extra precautions.
🚨 Safety Tips for Residents:
✔ Avoid unnecessary travel due to hazardous roads.
✔ Keep emergency supplies stocked in case of power outages.
✔ Clear snow from vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
