LONDON — In a shocking incident that has raised alarms throughout the community, four ambulances operated by Hatzola Northwest, a charity serving London’s Jewish community, were set ablaze early Monday morning. Authorities are investigating the fire as an antisemitic hate crime, with detectives probing potential links to an Islamist group known for its previous attacks.
### Police Investigation Underway
The fire, which erupted in Golders Green—a neighborhood with a significant Jewish population—destroyed the emergency medical vehicles and caused explosions that shattered windows in nearby homes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley of the Metropolitan Police confirmed that counterterrorism officers are leading the investigation, although the incident has not yet been classified as a terrorist act.
CCTV footage captured three individuals in dark clothing approaching the ambulances, allegedly carrying a canister prior to the outbreak of flames. The police have yet to make any arrests but are actively seeking the suspects.
“We are pursuing all lines of inquiry, including a claim of responsibility from a group with potential Iranian state links,” Rowley stated, referencing a video posted on social media platform Telegram by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia. The group has previously claimed responsibility for other attacks against Jewish targets across Europe.
### Community Leaders Respond
The attack has drawn condemnation across the political spectrum, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer labeling it a “horrific” act. Speaking with community leaders at 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer emphasized the urgent need for unity against antisemitism. “This kind of hatred has no place in our society,” he remarked, underlining the gravity of the situation.
This incident comes at a time when antisemitic incidents in the UK have skyrocketed, particularly following the recent conflict involving Hamas. According to the Community Security Trust, roughly 3,700 incidents were logged in 2025, a staggering increase from 1,662 in 2022.
Local councilor Peter Zinkin reflected the sentiments of many residents, expressing feelings of distress and anger: “Burning ambulances in the middle of the night is a disgrace. One has to ask why this occurred, particularly when the media has at times validated antisemitism,” he suggested, pointing to a broader societal issue.
### Heightened Fears and Future Implications
The attack has not only incited fear within the Jewish community—approximately 300,000 strong in Britain—but has also raised questions about ongoing safety measures. As the community prepares for the observance of Passover next month, the Metropolitan Police announced plans to bolster security around Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centers.
The fear permeating the Jewish community has been palpable. Mark Reisner, a local resident, described the scene as he arrived just as the third ambulance ignited. “I felt the explosion deep within my gut,” he recounted, echoing the collective shock felt throughout Golders Green.
The incident has also reignited discussions surrounding antisemitism’s increasing prevalence in the UK. Community leaders assert that the climate of hostility toward Jews has intensified, leading to calls for firmer action against hate crimes.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis condemned the act as a “sickening assault,” arguing that it reflects a worrisome trend facing Jewish communities globally. Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally also voiced her dismay, insisting that such acts of violence and hatred are intolerable in a civil society.
### Looking Ahead
As investigations proceed, the implications of this incident extend beyond immediate concerns for safety; they raise critical discussions regarding societal attitudes towards antisemitism and how such violence can be curtailed. The Labour-led government faces scrutiny over its handling of recent pro-Palestinian protests, which some believe have inadvertently encouraged antisemitic rhetoric and actions.
With the Jewish community facing increased threats, leaders urge the need for collective resistance against hatred. As Mark Rowley stated, while it’s premature to attribute this specific attack to state-sponsored terrorism, the rising tide of antisemitic sentiments presents a grave concern that must be addressed through concerted community action and robust policy responses.
