Severe weather alerts issued as blizzard conditions affect northern states and an early heatwave impacts the West Coast.

Severe weather conditions are sweeping across the United States, putting millions of residents under various alerts for blizzard conditions, potential tornadoes, and record-breaking temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued warnings affecting more than 11.5 million people for blizzards, an additional 4.3 million for winter storms, and approximately 20.6 million under extreme heat watches.

### Blizzard Conditions Hit Northern Plains and Upper Great Lakes

A powerful storm system has already begun to manifest significant impacts, creating blizzard-like conditions from eastern South Dakota through Wisconsin into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Reports from the National Weather Service noted over 20 inches of snow accumulation in parts of southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin as of Sunday afternoon.

Transportation remains severely affected. Officials cautioned motorists about hazardous conditions, emphasizing low visibility and snow-covered roads. Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin have all issued warnings about travel advisories, with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz authorizing the National Guard to assist with emergency operations. A no-travel advisory has been implemented in southern Minnesota, where officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Air travel has also been disrupted, with more than 600 flights canceled at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, and additional flights grounded in Detroit due to the adverse weather conditions. Local snowplow driver Aaron Haas described the storm as one of the worst in years, with snow piling high around him in Marshfield, Wisconsin.

As the blizzard progresses, conditions are expected to linger into Monday, with the possibility of lake-effect snow creating further challenges.

### Severe Weather Threat Expands to the East

The same storm system that’s causing blizzard conditions is also igniting severe weather across the Midwest and South. Meteorologists predict a developing squall line that will extend eastward, heightening the risk of severe weather from the Lower Great Lakes down through the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys.

Forecasters are particularly concerned about Monday, when moderate risks of severe weather will spread across parts of the Mid-Atlantic. Potential threats include tornadoes, damaging winds, hail, and flash flooding as the storms advance towards the East Coast. Areas from South Carolina to Maryland are predicted to experience notably damaging winds.

Cities such as Raleigh, North Carolina, Richmond, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., are expected to see significant impacts. An increased risk of severe weather is also forecast for portions of New York and northern Florida, albeit at a lower intensity.

### Record-Breaking Heat Expected in the West

In contrast, while many regions brace for snow and storms, a heatwave is set to blanket the western United States. A strong ridge of high pressure is expected to drive temperatures to record highs beginning Monday. Forecasters predict that areas in Southern California, the Desert Southwest, and the Great Basin may see temperatures reach the 90s and even 100s, with much of California experiencing highs of 70s and 80s.

This early-season heat wave raises concerns over increased wildfire risks across parts of the West and High Plains. Nebraska, for example, has dispatched approximately 30 National Guard members to combat multiple wildfires within its grasslands. Recent incidents in Nebraska have included wildfires damaging over 900 square miles, prompting Governor Jim Pillen to urge residents to follow evacuation orders due to forecasted extraordinary winds.

### Widespread Flooding and Landslides in Hawaii

Severe weather is not limited to the continental United States. Hawaii is facing its own challenges as heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding in areas including Maui. Reports indicate that more than 30,000 residents are without power, and many roads have been closed due to the flooding.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen confirmed that some areas received up to 20 inches of rain in a span of just 24 hours, leading to dangerous conditions such as flash flooding, landslides, and sinkholes. Emergency responders, including National Guard members, are actively involved in rescue efforts across the island.

Bissen expressed gratitude for community support during this difficult situation, encouraging residents to remain vigilant. Videos from the scenes depict washed-out roads and dramatic floodwaters overtaking vehicles.

As the nation grapples with these extreme weather conditions, officials at all levels continue to monitor developments closely, urging residents to stay updated with local forecasts and heed safety warnings.
