H2: Protesters Attempt to Breach Beagle Facility in Wisconsin
On Saturday, a significant protest took place outside Ridglan Farms, a beagle breeding and research center located in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. The event escalated when protesters attempted to gain entry into the facility, leading to confrontations with law enforcement. According to reports, police utilized tear gas and pepper spray as they sought to disperse the crowd, which reportedly comprised between 300 and 400 animal rights activists.
H2: Law Enforcement Response and Arrests
Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett released a statement describing the protest as “not peaceful” and claimed that the protesters were forcefully trying to breach the property and obstructing access for emergency services. He noted that protestors ignored designated areas for protest and blocked roads, causing further tensions.
Some individuals managed to cross barricades—including a trench filled with manure, hay bales, and a barbed-wire fence—but were ultimately unsuccessful in accessing the facility, which houses approximately 2,000 beagles. Barrett highlighted the violent behavior exhibited by the protesters, who were assaulting officers during the encounter.
As tensions escalated, Wayne Hsiung, the leader of the group Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs, was arrested. Hsiung later took to social media to share an image of his arrest.
H2: Background of the Protests
This demonstration marks the second such incident in recent months. In March, a similar protest led to a breach of the facility, during which around 30 dogs were removed. The earlier protest resulted in the arrest of 27 individuals on various charges, including trespassing. Following that incident, Ridglan Farms denied allegations of animal mistreatment but agreed to relinquish its state breeding license effective July 1, part of an arrangement to avoid prosecution related to animal welfare concerns.
The Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs had made their intent to seize the dogs public prior to the protest, originally planning to conduct their operation on Sunday. However, the group advanced their timeline, which ultimately led to the confrontation with law enforcement both outside the facility and later at the County Jail in Madison, where activists continued to rally after the initial operation concluded.
H2: The Facility’s Stance
Ridglan Farms has consistently refuted claims of animal mistreatment. The facility maintains on its official website that “no credible evidence of animal abuse, cruelty, mistreatment, or neglect at Ridglan Farms has ever been presented or substantiated.” The organization insists on its compliance with relevant regulations and has stated that its practices are in line with standard operations for breeding and research facilities.
Despite the ongoing scrutiny and protests, Ridglan Farms remains operational, emphasizing that it is committed to the welfare of its animals. As activists express frustration over their inability to rescue the beagles, the future of the facility and its practices continues to attract considerable public attention and debate.
