Tennessee Overcomes 16-Point Deficit in Thrilling Victory
Tennessee stages epic comeback. The No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers pulled off a stunning comeback win vs Vanderbilt, erasing a 16-point first-half deficit to claim an 81-76 victory on Saturday in Knoxville.
Zakai Zeigler led the charge, scoring all of his 22 points in the second half, including crucial three-pointers that ignited the rally. Chaz Lanier and Jahmai Mashack also stepped up, helping Tennessee secure the win in a high-intensity SEC showdown.
Vanderbilt Dominates First Half, Tennessee Fights Back
At 2:06 left in the first half, Tennessee trailed 42-26, as Vanderbilt’s offense was firing on all cylinders, shooting 55% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.
Despite struggling defensively, the Volunteers slowly chipped away at the lead. Lanier’s buzzer-beating jumper cut the deficit to 13 at halftime, setting the stage for an explosive comeback.
Second-Half Surge Led by Zeigler and Lanier
Tennessee erased the deficit by the 12:30 mark of the second half, with Zeigler drilling consecutive three-pointers to tie the game at 55-55. A Lanier layup moments later gave the Vols their first lead at 57-55.

Vanderbilt’s Effort Falls Short in the Final Minutes
Despite a strong performance from Jason Edwards (24 points, 6-for-10 from three) and Jaylen Carey (18 points, 7 rebounds), Vanderbilt couldn’t withstand Tennessee’s relentless second-half pressure.
A clutch corner three from Mashack gave Tennessee a 74-70 lead with 2:27 left, and a Zakai Zeigler layup with 19 seconds remaining sealed the victory.
Post-Game Reactions & SEC Standings Update
Vanderbilt head coach Mark Byington acknowledged his team’s effort but emphasized the challenge of winning on the road against a powerhouse like Tennessee.
“You’ve gotta be really good to beat a team like Tennessee on this court, and we’re just not there yet,” Byington said.
With this win, Tennessee improves to 21-5 overall (8-5 SEC), splitting the regular-season series after Vanderbilt’s 76-75 win in Nashville on Jan. 18.
