Arrest Made in Threat Against OpenAI CEO
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A Texas man has been arrested for allegedly launching a Molotov cocktail at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and making threats against the company, authorities confirmed on Monday. The accused, 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama, traveled from Texas with intent to harm Altman due to his opposition to artificial intelligence.

According to police reports, Moreno-Gama is believed to have thrown the incendiary device at Altman’s home around 4 a.m. on Friday. The attack ignited a small fire at the exterior gate, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Shortly thereafter, he allegedly proceeded to OpenAI’s headquarters, approximately three miles away, where he threatened security personnel, expressing a desire to burn the building down and harm anyone inside.
FBI Acting Special Agent Matt Cobo described the assault as “planned, targeted, and extremely serious.” Surveillance footage captures a figure in dark clothing throwing the Molotov cocktail and later attempting to break into OpenAI’s property.
Upon his arrest, authorities discovered Moreno-Gama in possession of incendiary devices, kerosene, a lighter, and a document outlining his anti-AI beliefs and threats specifically directed at Altman.
Legal Charges Filed
Moreno-Gama now faces multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder and attempted arson in state court. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated that attempts on both Altman’s life and a security guard’s life elevate the seriousness of these charges, which could lead to a prison sentence ranging from 19 years to life.
Federal charges have also been filed, including possession of an unregistered firearm and destruction of property using explosives. The penalties for these offenses could add up to 30 years in prison. Moreno-Gama is set to appear in court on Tuesday, but records do not yet indicate whether he has secured legal representation.
U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian has characterized the incident as an act of domestic terrorism, asserting that authorities will work diligently to prosecute Moreno-Gama to the fullest extent of the law.
