Hostage Backgrounds:

  • Ohad Ben Ami was kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7, 2023. His wife, Raz Ben Ami, was also taken but was freed in a previous exchange.
  • Eli Sharabi was also abducted from Kibbutz Be’eri. His wife and daughters were killed during the October 7 attack. His brother, Yossi Sharabi, was also taken but died while in captivity.
  • Or Levy was attending the Nova Music Festival when he was kidnapped. His wife, Eynav Levy, was killed in the attack.

Exchange Deal Details:

Under the agreement brokered in Qatar, Hamas has been releasing women, children, the elderly, and sick individuals. In return, Israel has freed 583 Palestinian prisoners, including some serving life sentences and minors held without formal charges.

On Saturday, Hamas expects Israel to release 183 Palestinian detainees, with:

  • 18 serving life sentences
  • 54 serving lesser sentences
  • 111 detained in Gaza after October 7, 2023

Tensions Over Implementation

Hamas accused Israel of delays and hesitations in implementing the deal. A statement from Hamas claimed that humanitarian aid and prisoner releases have not been carried out as agreed. Meanwhile, the United Nations reports difficulties in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza but noted that some prices have dropped and distribution has improved.

Looking Ahead

This prisoner exchange remains a key component of efforts to reduce tensions and secure a lasting ceasefire. However, with both sides voicing frustrations, the stability of the agreement remains uncertain.
