Transponders to Be Installed at Major NYC Airports Following Fatal Collision
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced the upcoming installation of transponders on fire trucks and other rescue vehicles at LaGuardia, Kennedy, and Newark Liberty airports. This initiative follows a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concerning a tragic incident on March 22, where an Air Canada jet collided with a fire truck on the runway at LaGuardia Airport, resulting in the deaths of two pilots and injuries to several individuals.

Transponders are devices that broadcast the location of vehicles, allowing air traffic controllers to obtain real-time data about ground movements. The technology will be integrated with the existing Airport Surface Detection Systems (ASDE-X) currently employed at LaGuardia and 34 other airports nationwide. These systems utilize radar, transponder data from aircraft and ground vehicles, and other inputs to create a comprehensive operational display for air traffic controllers. Notably, the ASDE-X can also activate alarms to warn controllers of potential collisions on the airfield.
The tragic incident at LaGuardia saw the fire truck inadvertently drive onto the runway despite being cleared by an air traffic controller. Simultaneously, the airport was experiencing heightened traffic levels and responding to an emergency involving another aircraft, complicating the air traffic situation.

In light of recent events, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has strongly recommended the installation of transponders at major airports across the country, offering financial assistance for their implementation. James Allen, the chief communications officer for the Port Authority, expressed the agency’s commitment to investing in safety technologies.
