Eighteen individuals taken into custody for suspected drug trafficking activities in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES — In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, federal authorities arrested 18 individuals on Wednesday related to the sale of illegal drugs, including fentanyl and methamphetamine, around MacArthur Park, a densely populated neighborhood west of downtown Los Angeles.

### Details of the Operation

The arrests follow a comprehensive operation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and local law enforcement. During the operation, authorities seized an alarming 40 pounds of fentanyl from a single residence, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Among those apprehended, a couple from South LA, identified as Mallaly Moreno-Lopez and Jackson Tarfur, is believed to be a key source of the narcotics primarily sold in the park. The couple allegedly stored drugs in a storefront and distributed them to street-level dealers.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli announced the operation during a press conference held at the park. “We’re here today because California policy has failed,” he stated, emphasizing that MacArthur Park should serve families and residents, not drug dealers. He described the area as struggling under the weight of open-air drug use and growing homelessness.

### Community Impact

MacArthur Park has faced ongoing challenges, with various sections witnessing both community gatherings and open drug use. While one area is often filled with families enjoying picnics and children playing sports, another section regularly sees individuals using drugs in public view. This duality has made the park a focal point of law enforcement efforts, as it is situated in a highly contested gang territory.

As part of the operation, agents executed multiple warrants, including six targeting businesses reportedly involved in drug sales in and around MacArthur Park. The investigation points to the Sinaloa Cartel as the main supplier of fentanyl and methamphetamine in this area.

During the raids, law enforcement encountered obstacles, including utilizing saws to breach walls of businesses suspected of being connected to drug activity. Aerial footage depicted agents gathered at a site across from the park while conducting searches.

Essayli attributed the area’s ongoing issues to ineffective California policies that have resulted in lenient consequences for drug users and an emphasis on harm reduction programs, such as providing clean needles and Narcan.

The 18 individuals arrested are expected to appear in court on Thursday. Authorities confirmed that seven additional suspects remain at large. Legal representation for Moreno-Lopez and Tarfur has not yet been established, and they were not available for comment.

The city of Los Angeles is also taking steps to revitalize MacArthur Park, with plans to improve landscaping, walking paths, and enhance drainage systems to capture rainstorm runoff into the park’s lake.

As the investigation continues, authorities are committed to addressing the issues plaguing MacArthur Park and restoring safety and community integrity. The operation is seen as a critical step in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region.
