Dairy farm issues recall for certain cheese items amid FDA inquiry into E. coli cases.

A California dairy producer has initiated a voluntary recall of certain cheddar cheese products following an ongoing investigation into an E. coli outbreak linked to its items. Raw Farm, based in Fresno, is recalling seven varieties of its cheddar cheese, which are made with raw milk. The expiration dates of the affected products range from May 2026 to September 2026.

### E. coli Investigation and Recall Details

The recall comes amid an inquiry by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which began last month after multiple cases of E. coli food poisoning were reported among consumers of Raw Farm products. According to the FDA, nine individuals, including children, have become ill as a result of this outbreak. Seven of these cases have been directly linked to the consumption of Raw Farm products. Specifically, two persons reported drinking Raw Farm milk, while five others ate or were served its raw cheddar cheese.

In a previous update, the FDA indicated that it was in the midst of inspecting Raw Farm’s facilities. However, at that point, officials had not detected E. coli bacteria in the company’s products. While Raw Farm asserts that no E. coli has been found in its cheese, the company has chosen to proceed with the recall “under protest” in an effort to find a resolution moving forward.

### The Rise of Raw Milk Sales

The growing popularity of raw milk products has been attributed in part to social media influences and advocacy from movements such as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s initiative to promote unprocessed food options. Raw milk, defined as milk that has not undergone the pasteurization process, retains natural bacteria that can include harmful pathogens such as E. coli, salmonella, and listeria. The sale of unpasteurized milk across state lines is federally prohibited for human consumption, while state regulations on raw milk sales vary considerably. Some states permit retail sales, others limit sales to farm locations, and some allow arrangements known as cow shares, where customers can buy shares in livestock for access to the milk.

### FDA’s Oversight

The FDA possesses the authority to compel a food manufacturer to perform a recall if there is a substantial risk of serious harm or fatalities. However, the agency first extends the opportunity for voluntary compliance. In the case of Raw Farm, the company confirmed that the recall is limited to its cheddar cheese products, with no other items being affected.

Genetic analysis of the E. coli strains from the affected individuals indicates that they are closely related, suggesting a common source of infection. This finding has prompted increased scrutiny on Raw Farm’s production processes and product safety standards.

### Consumer Advisory

Consumers holding the affected cheeses are advised to return them to the place of purchase or discard them. In light of the investigation, there has been a significant emphasis on food safety, particularly concerning raw dairy products. Public health officials continue to urge consumers to be vigilant regarding the consumption of unpasteurized products given the potential health risks.

As Raw Farm navigates this situation, its response will likely have broader implications for the raw milk movement and the regulatory landscape surrounding dairy production practices. The results of ongoing investigations could lead to further scrutiny, enforcement actions, or changes in consumer behavior regarding raw dairy products.
