Brazil’s leftist President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has sparked controversy by advising citizens to simply stop buying expensive grocery items as a solution to the country’s rising food prices.
In a video circulating online, Lula urged Brazilians to be frugal, claiming that if consumers refuse to purchase costly products, sellers will be forced to lower prices.
“If you go to the supermarket and see that something is expensive, don’t buy it,” Lula stated. “If everyone does this, businesses will have no choice but to drop prices or risk their products going to waste.”

While Lula remains optimistic about the economy, many critics argue that his comments ignore deeper economic issues, such as currency devaluation, inflation, and supply chain disruptions.
Brazil’s Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad, previously stated that food prices may decline this year due to strong agricultural production, but the overall economic forecast remains uncertain.
Despite Lula’s reassurances, many Brazilians are struggling with the cost of living, leading to increased criticism of his socialist economic policies. Some argue that government intervention, rather than consumer boycotts, is needed to tackle inflation effectively.
Is refusing to buy expensive groceries a real solution to inflation? Or is this another tone-deaf response from a socialist leader? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
