U.S. Service Members Missing in Morocco During Military Exercises
Search and Rescue Operations Underway
Two U.S. service members are reported missing in southwestern Morocco after participating in the ongoing African Lion military exercises. According to the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the incident occurred on Saturday evening around 9 p.m. in proximity to the Cap Draa Training Area, located near the city of Tan Tan, close to the Atlantic Ocean.
The service members, identified as U.S. Army soldiers, were on a recreational hike following the conclusion of the day’s training activities. A U.S. defense official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the soldiers were not in the midst of any official exercises at the time of their disappearance. The official noted that the soldiers were last seen near ocean cliffs during a scheduled training session before they failed to return.
Scope of the Search Effort
The search and rescue efforts have been initiated by U.S. and Moroccan military personnel, integrating various resources including helicopters, ships, mountain rescue units, and divers. AFRICOM stated that the incident is under investigation and ongoing efforts are being made to locate the missing service members. The search teams started their operations soon after the soldiers were reported missing when they did not return as anticipated.
The terrain of the Cap Draa area is known for its mountainous landscape, interspersed with desert and semidesert plains, potentially complicating the search efforts.
Background on the African Lion Exercises
The African Lion military exercise, which began in April, involves over 7,000 personnel from more than 30 countries. This year’s maneuvers span across four host nations: Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal, and are scheduled to conclude in early May. The range of activities aims to bolster regional security cooperation and enhance the readiness of military forces from participating nations in response to global crises.
AFRICOM emphasized that these exercises are fundamental for fostering alliances between the United States and its African partners, serving as a platform for high-level military officials to discuss and address various security challenges.
Historically, the African Lion exercises have faced challenges. In 2012, a helicopter crash during the training resulted in the deaths of two U.S. Marines and injuries to two others in Agadir, Morocco.
Geopolitical Context
Morocco’s relationship with the United States is significant, especially given the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region. Since 2020, several military coups have taken place in West African nations such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. These events have contributed to a growing sense of disillusionment with Western powers among certain military factions within those countries.
The search for the missing service members underscores the complexities of military cooperation in regions marked by instability. Military officials continue to stress the necessity of these exercises in strengthening ties and preparing forces for unforeseen challenges.
As the search operations progress, both U.S. and Moroccan military leaders are hopeful for a swift resolution to the situation, while continuing to monitor the safety and well-being of all personnel involved in the African Lion exercises.
