EL PASO, Texas — A cloud of concern hangs over Camp East Montana, a newly established immigrant detention center at Fort Bliss, following alarming reports of neglect and deaths among detainees. Opened in August 2025, the facility currently holds around 3,000 immigrants and has gained notoriety for being the largest immigrant detention center in the United States, as well as the site of multiple detainee fatalities.
### Rising Concerns Amid Detainee Deaths
The conditions at Camp East Montana have sparked outrage among lawmakers, human rights advocates, and former detainees, with mounting calls for its closure. In light of these troubling reports, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has taken steps to reassess its contractor, replacing Acquisition Logistics with a new firm, Amentum Services, which previously operated as a subcontractor. DHS has emphasized that these changes will ensure higher detention standards and greater medical care accessibility for detainees, a point met with skepticism from advocates.
Critics, however, argue that switching contractors is insufficient when pervasive issues exist at the core of the detention system itself. “It’s not enough to just switch contractors; Acquisition Logistics needs to be investigated,” said Escobar, echoing the sentiments of many advocates who want systemic reforms rather than band-aid solutions.
Moreover, an internal ICE inspection earlier this year identified a staggering 49 violations of detention standards at Camp East Montana. These included failures to provide adequate medical care, as well as lapses in suicide prevention protocols—issues that have further fueled public indignation.
