Tornado Strikes South of Chicago, Causing Extensive Damage
A powerful tornado struck near Kankakee County, approximately 47.5 miles south of Chicago, on Tuesday, leading to downed trees and power lines as well as overwhelming local emergency services. According to Illinois State Police Officer Trooper Jayme Bufford, the tornado primarily impacted the south side of Kankakee City. Meanwhile, just across the Illinois-Indiana border in Newton County, a second apparent tornado impacted Lake Village, damaging multiple residences and causing injuries, according to Indiana State Police Corporal Eric Rot. Specific details about the number of injuries or their severity were not immediately available, as officials noted the focus remained on emergency response operations.
Newton County officials revealed the extent of devastation in a video shared on social media. Sheriff Shannon Cothran stated that Lake Village experienced a “direct hit,” and urged residents to avoid the area to allow emergency responders to effectively manage the situation. Fire chief Rob Churchill echoed these sentiments, confirming that the region is currently in recovery mode following the storm.
