Ford Motor Company has announced a significant recall affecting nearly 4.4 million vehicles due to a software issue that could jeopardize the functionality of trailer lights and brakes. This flaw poses safety concerns, as it can lead to impaired communication between the towing vehicle and any attached trailer, especially when the vehicle is initially started.

The automotive giant revealed that the malfunction may cause the trailer’s tail lights, turn signals, and brake functions to fail. This communication loss is typically indicated by a warning that reads “Trailer Brake Module Fault,” with the turn signal flashing at an increased rate. Additionally, vehicle owners may also encounter a “Blind Spot Assist System fault” message. If these alerts appear, it is advised that drivers take caution, as they indicate a potential risk of accidents.
According to a notice released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this software issue can significantly elevate the chances of an accident. “Inoperable trailer lighting and trailer braking functions can reduce a driver’s ability to control an attached trailer and make the attached trailer less visible to other drivers,” the NHTSA stated.

The recall encompasses a range of Ford trucks, vans, and SUVs manufactured between the model years 2021 and 2026. Notably, the Ford F-150 and F-250 pickups account for over 3.4 million of these affected vehicles. Ford has assured customers that they are currently investigating this issue, which dates back to October 2025. However, the company confirmed that there have been no reported accidents, injuries, or fires connected to this software glitch.
