A dramatic avalanche struck a train traveling through the Swiss Alps on February 17, capturing the attention of both passengers and onlookers. The incident occurred near the popular ski resort town of Zermatt, located in the Valais canton of southern Switzerland.
### Moment of Impact Captured on Video
Kirsten Osborne, an Australian residing in the U.K., was aboard the train during this alarming event. She recorded the avalanche as it thundered down the mountainside, sending a massive wall of snow barreling toward the train. In a video she shared, a child is heard repeatedly expressing concern as the snowy wave rapidly approached.
The situation escalated quickly; moments later, the train was engulfed by the avalanche, which covered the windows in snow and caused the train to shake. Passengers reported that they were stranded for approximately two hours following the incident. Osborne noted, “We were stuck for two hours before the rescue and provided bus transport to safety.”
### No Injuries Reported, Operations Suspended
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the passengers. The rail company operating the route, Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, confirmed that all individuals on board were safely evacuated in coordination with emergency services. The company issued a statement indicating awareness of ongoing dangers due to the heavy snowfall affecting the region.
Around 11 a.m. on the day of the avalanche, another avalanche occurred between Täsch and Randa, further complicating the situation. As a precautionary measure, Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn has suspended operations on the St. Niklaus–Täsch route until further notice. The company stated, “We are in close contact with specialists and experts to assess the situation along the entire route network between Disentis (GR) and Zermatt (VS).”
This avalanche incident follows another concerning event just a day prior, where a train derailed near Goppenstein, injuring five people. Local reports suggest that an avalanche might have played a role in that derailment, although investigations are still in progress.
### Ongoing Avalanche Risks in the Alps
The Swiss Alps are currently facing heightened avalanche risks due to heavy snowfall this winter season, impacting the ongoing tourist activities. Areas across the western Alps are being closely monitored, with reports indicating significant risk levels that could affect regional travel safety.
The events of February 17 serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of winter conditions in mountainous areas. As authorities continue to assess and respond to the avalanche risks, travelers are urged to stay informed and heed any advisories issued by local emergency services.
